Twilight Book Discussion: Interrogations

ourhappyplace1

Hi guys! We know it’s been quite a long, long time since we’ve continued with the Twilight book discussion. We will try our best to have this discussion every week (every Friday, hopefully). For those who are new, we decided to have this book discussion as we know that more are reading Twilight due to the release of the movie and we had a Twilight exclusive book discussion during one of our very first event – Twilight Soiree @ NLB.

So now after a long hiatus, here’s Twilight Chapter 10: Interrogations discussion.

“I don’t know how you’re brave enough to be alone with him,” she breathed.
“Why?” I was shocked, but she didn’t understand my reaction.
“He’s so… intimidating. I wouldn’t know what to say to him.” She made a face, probably remembering this morning or last night, when he’d turned the overwhelming force of his eyes on her.
“I do have some trouble with incoherency when I’m around him,” I admitted.
“Oh well. He is unbelievable gorgeous.” Jessica srugged as if this excused any flaws. Which, in her book, it probably did.
“There’s a lot mpore to him than that.”
“Really? Like what?”
I wished I had let it go. Almost as much as I was hoping he’d been kidding about listening in.
“I can’t explain it right… but he’s even more unbelievable behind the face.” The vampire who wanted to be good – who ran around saving people’s lives so he wouldn’t be a monster… I stared toward the front of the room.
“Is that possible?” She giggled.
I ignored her, trying to look like I was paying attention to Mr. Varner.
“So you like him, then?” She wasn’t about to give up.
“Yes,” I said curtly.
“I mean, do you really like him?” she urged.
“Yes,” I said again, blushing. I hoped that detail wouldn’t register in her thoughts.
She’d had enough with the single syllable answers. “How much do you like him?”
“Too much,” I whispered back. “More than he likes me. But I dont’ see how I can help that.” I sighed, one blush blending into the next.

1. In this chapter, we get to see more of Jessica’s personality. So on your first impression, what did you think about Jessica throughout these past few chapters?

2. If you were in Jessica’s shoes and you had more time to interrogate Bella, what questions would you ask her to get all the juicy details out?

3. Edward and Bella were sitting together in the cafeteria and they drifted to the topic about how Edward cares so much more for Bella. (pg 184, Para 2) This then led to Bella saying that whenever Edward says something else, it seemed as though he was trying to say goodbye. In your own opinion, why do you think Bella says this?

4. We know that Emmett’s favourite meal is the grizzly bear and Edward’s favourite is the mountain lion. So what do you think the other Cullens’ favourite meals are?

Twilight Book Discussion: Theory

ourhappyplace11

Apologies for the delay. Bessy is quite busy with school with her upcoming tests so I’ll be helping her with the book discussion. This time we thought of making the book discussion more interactive. So instead of us spilling all the questions to you, we will be posting 2 – 3 questions for each chapter and we would like you to contribute your own questions for that particular chapter. You can ask questions that is related to the chapter itself or questions that are linked between the current chapter discussed and the previous one. We hope this will make the book discussion more interactive. So without further ado, here’s Chapter 9: Theory.

“I bit my lip. He looked down at me, his honey eyes unexpectedly gentle.

“I won’t laugh,” he promised.

“I’m more afraid that you’ll be angry with me.”

“Is it that bad?”

“Pretty much, yeah.”

He waited. I was looking down at my hands, so I couldn’t see his expression.

“Go ahead.” His voice was calm.

“I don’t know how to start,” I admitted.

“Why don’t you start a the beginning… you said you didn’t come up with this on your own.”

“No.”

“What got you started – a book? A movie?” he probed.

“No – it was Saturday, at the beach.” I risked a glance up at his face. He look puzzled.

“I ran into an old family friend – Jacob Black,” I continued. “His dad and Charlie have been friends since I was a baby.”

He still look confused.

“His dad is one of the Quileute elders.” I watched him carefully. His confused expression froze in place. “We went for a walk – ” I edited all my scheming out of the story. ” – and he was telling me some old legends – trying to scare me, I think. He told me one…” I hesitated.

“Go on,” he said.

“About vampires.” I realized I was whispering. I couldn’t look at his face now. But I saw his knuckles tighten convulsively on the wheel.”

1. What do you think was going through Edward’s mind when Bella revealed about his secret which she got it from with the help of Jacob Black?

2. Why do you think Edward asked Bella not to go into the woods alone?

Twilight Book Discussion: Port Angeles

I started with the most undemanding. Or so I thought. “Why are you in Port Angeles?”

He looked down, folding his large hands together slowly on the table. His eyes flickered up at me from under his lashes, the hint of a smirk on his face.

“Next.”

“But that’s the easiest one,” I objected.

“Next,” he repeated.

“Okay, then.” I glared at him, and continued slowly. “Let’s say, hypothetically of course, that…someone…could know what people are thinking, read minds, you know – with a few exceptions.”

“Just one exception,” he corrected, “hypothetically.”

“All right, with one exception, then.” I was thrilled that he was playing along, but I tried to seem casual. “How does that work? What are the limitations? How would…that someone…find someone else at exactly the right time? How would he know she was in trouble?” I wondered if my convoluted questions even made sense.

“Hypothetically?” he asked.

“Sure.”

“Well, if…that someone…”

“Let’s call him ‘Joe,’” I suggested.

He smiled wryly. “Joe, then. If Joe had been paying attention, the timing wouldn’t have needed to be quite so exact.” He shook his head, rolling his eyes. “Only you could get into trouble in a town this small. You would have devastated their crime rate statistics for a decade, you know.”

“We were speaking of a hypothetical case,” I reminded him frostily.

He laughed at me, his eyes warm.

HELLO EVERYONE, I AM FINALLY BACK! No, the worst is not over yet. I’m simply here because I have time, and even so, I am late by a day once again. I don’t think you could ever trust me to be on time ever again. :( Thanks Nash for helping out with last week’s discussion, and I’ll reply to it and the previous ones after doing this.

So, in the meantime, welcome to Chapter 8: Port Angeles! The very chapter where there were two pivotal points. 1) Edward saving Bella from the potential criminals and 2) Bella extracting the facts out from Edward. There’s more in the next chapter though. Hee.

Questions, questions!
1. Let’s have some fun this week. If your prom was themed “semiformal”, what would you wear there? Bonus cookies for pictures! (Note: No quoting of any item from the movie.)

2. ‘”That’s why Lauren doesn’t like you.’” Jessica said that, after spilling to Bella that Tyler has been going around saying that he’s bringing her to prom. Now, having once discussed Lauren’s personality, do you agree with Jessica?

3. Bella was getting to screaming, and recalling the fighting techniques. Why do you think she didn’t immediately do either of them, but delayed a little?

4. ‘”Er…sure,” Jessica breathed.’ If you were Jessica, would you really pretend to not have eaten just so you could be with Edward and Bella? (And subsequently eat again?)

5. Ignore this question if it’s been explained in Midnight Sun. Why do you think Edward chose not to answer Bella’s first question?

6. “The waitress appeared as if she’d been called. Or listening.” If you were the waitress, what would you have made out of the situation and the conversation?

Most number of questions ever, so far. Hoping to break the record in the future! :D

Twilight Book Discussion: Nightmares

ourhappyplace1

Apologies for the delay. Bessy is busy with school work so I volunteered to help her out. This week we will be touching on Chapter 7: Nightmares. Happy discussing! :)

First, I had to decide if it was possible that what Jacob had said about the Cullens could be true.

Immediately my mind responded with a resounding negative. It was silly and morbid to entertain such ridiculous notions. But what, then? I asked myself. There was no rational explanation for how I was alive at this moment. I listed again in my head the things I’d observed myself: the impossible speed and strength, the eye colour shifting from black to gold and back again, the inhuman beauty, the pale, frigid skin. And more – small things that registered slowly – how they never seemed to eat, the disturbing grace with which they moved. And the way he sometimes spoke, with unfamiliar cadences and phrases that better fir the style of a turn-of-the-century novel than that of a twenty-first-century classroom. He had skipped class the day we’d done blood typing. He hadn’t said no to the beach trip till he heard where we were going. He seemed to know what everyone around him was thinking… except me. He had told me he was the villain, dangerous…

Could the Cullens be vampires?

Well, they were something. Something outside the possibility of rational justification was taking place in front of my incredulous eyes. Whether it be Jacob’s cold ones or my own superhero theory, Edward Cullen was not… human. He was something more.

1. In the first part of the chapter, Bella was playing a CD of Phil’s favourite band. “… they used a little too much bass and shrieking for my tastes.” Without using your knowledge of what you know about Twilight, what type of genre or band did you think Bella was listening to the first time you read this chapter?

2. In her nightmare, Bella saw Jacob transformed into a werewolf and Edward with sharp teeth beckoning her over. So why do you think she dreamed of Edward and Jacob in that particular way?

3. Bella was reading Pride & Prejudice in her lawn. Stephenie mentioned that one of her inspirations to write Twilight was Pride & Prejudice. In your own opinion, why did Stephenie regard P & P as one of her inspirations for Twilight?

4. It was mentioned that Bella felt awkward having a conversation with Mike. On the other hand, she felt more at ease talking to Angela. Why do you think so?

Twilight Book Discussion: Scary Stories

TODAY, IN CLASS, I WROTE “MRS ROBERT PATTINSON” ON MY LEFT HAND. :D I ended the last “N” in his surname with a very high stroke upwards, and because I was using a brown pen, I decided to add in branches and draw a green patch around it. Random little thing I decided to share with you guys.

So, I profusely apologize for the absence of punctuality for this new book discussion entry. I was tied down recently with so much new commitments at school. >:[ I don’t like it! But, oh well. Anyway it’s Saturday and I’m here, already, so let’s move on to Chapter 6: Scary Stories! Hi there Jacob. :D

“They didn’t hunt the way others of their kind did – they weren’t supposed to be dangerous to the tribe. So my great-grandfather made a truce with them. If they would promise to stay off our lands, we wouldn’t expose them to the pale-faces.” He winked at me.

“If they weren’t dangerous, then why…?” I tried to understand, struggling not to let him see how seriously I was considering his ghost story.

“There’s always a risk for humans to be around the cold ones, even if they’re civilized like this clan was. You never know when they might get too hungry to resist.” He deliberately worked a tick edge of menace into his tone.

“What do you mean, ‘civilized’?”

“They claimed that they didn’t hunt humans. They supposedly were somehow able to prey on animals instead.”

I tried to keep my voice casual. “So how does it fit in with the Cullens? Are they like the cold ones your great-grandfather met?”

“No.” He paused dramatically. “They are the same ones.”

He must have thought the expression on my face was fear inspired by his story. He smiled, pleased, and continued.

“There are more of them now, a new female and a new male, but the rest are the same. In my great-grandfather’s time they already knew of the leader, Carlisle. He’d been here and gone before your people had even arrived.” He was fighting a smile.

“And what are they?” I finally asked. “What are the cold ones?”

He smiled darkly.

I have no idea if I should continue and end the excerpt the way you guys are probably wanting it to, but if you do want me to add in the ending just for the sake of the drama, go ahead and tell me all right. If not, I’ll just begin with the questions!

Q1: Lauren was mean to Bella, but only because Tyler was planning to ask Bella to prom. With this main point and other clues you can find, discuss Lauren’s personality.

Q2: Although Lauren and most other girls had already decided to stay on the beach, why do you think Bella wanted to wait till Tyler and Eric had committed to staying before she got up to join the pro-hiking group?

Q3: When Jacob asked whether Bella knew where he could get a master cylinder for his car, why do you think that Bella didn’t tell him immediately that she didn’t know what it was?

Q4: Jacob: So, is Forks driving you insane yet?
Bella: Oh, I’d say that’s an understatement.
Following that, Bella noted that Jacob “grinned understandingly”. Do you think that the word “understandingly” in this case was being used in the case of Bella’s opinion, or as a factual case?

Q5: “He must have thought the expression on my face was fear inspired by his story.” We all know it wasn’t – but what was Bella afraid of, then?

Q6: “It was nice to see you again.” How do you think Mike felt in response to that statement by Jacob at that moment?

Also, from this onwards, I’ll now officially reply to the book discussion myself too! Try to write your own opinion first before looking at mine and then arguing with me, okay? :D Happy discussing!

Twilight Book Discussion: Blood Type

OMG, ONE OF MY FAVOURITE CHAPTERS HAHAHA! This is such a cute turning point that, sadly, had to be retrieved out from the movie. Anyway, I sincerely apologize for my lack of replies to the last book discussion entry. If you didn’t know yet, I have commented back already. If you wish to continue discussing from there, I don’t mind!

So now, one week later, let’s move on to Chapter 5: Blood Type. AHHHH ONE OF MY FAVOURITE CHAPTERS!

Suddenly the sidewalk disappeared from beneath me. My eyes flew open in shock. Edward had scooped me up in his arms, as easily as if I weighed ten pounds instead of a hundred and ten.

“Put me down!” Please, please let me not vomit on him. He was walking before I was finished talking.

“Hey!” Mike called, already ten paces behind us.

Edward ignored him. “You look awful,” he told me, grinning.

“Put me back on the sidewalk,” I moaned. The rocking movement of his walk was not helping. He held me away from his body, gingerly, supporting all my weight with just his arms – it didn’t seem to bother him.

“So you faint at the sight of blood?” he asked. This seemed to amuse him.

I didn’t answer. I closed my eyes again and fought the nausea with all my strength, clamping my lips together.

“And not even your own blood,” he continued, enjoying himself.

I didn’t know how he opened the door while carrying me, but it was suddenly warm, so I knew we were inside.

“Oh my,” I heard a female voice gasp.

“She fainted in Biology,” Edward explained.

I opened my eyes. I was in the office, and Edward was striding past the front counter toward the nurse’s door. Ms Cope, the redheaded front office receptionist, ran ahead of him to hold it open. The grandmotherly nurse looked up from a novel, astonished, as Edward swung me into the room and placed me gently on the crackly paper that covered the brown vinyl mattress on the one cot. Then he moved to stand against the wall as far across the narrow room as possible.

“She’s just a little faint,” he reassured the startled nurse. “They’re blood typing in Biology.”

The nurse nodded sagely. “There’s always one.”

He muffled a snicker.

Q1: Name the different emotions you think Bella would have felt in between the transition from when she thought Edward wasn’t in the cafeteria, to when Jessica said, “Edward Cullen is staring at you again.”

Q2: What do you think was the emotion (note: emotion, not feeling) that channelled Bella and made her raise her face to the rain outside the school building?

Q3: Edward asked, “Are you frightened of me now?” and Bella instantly answered, “No.” Why do you think Bella didn’t even pause to think through her answer?

Three questions only, but I want you guys to talk about this and more random stuff okay! Also, I apologize for the late posting of this, as I came home pretty late from school. But let the bashing arguing debating begin! LOL, whatever.

Twilight Online Book Discussion: Invitations

Without further ado, welcome to Chapter 4: Invitations!

“Bella, you are utterly absurd,” he said, his low voice cold.

My palms tingled – I wanted so badly to hit something. I was surprised at myself. I was usually a nonviolent person. I turned my back and started to walk away.

“Wait,” he called. I kept walking, sloshing angrily through the rain. But he was next to me, easily keeping pace.

“I’m sorry, that was rude,” he said as we walked. I ignored him. “I’m not saying it isn’t true,” he continued, “but it was rude to say, anyway.”

“Why won’t you leave me alone?” I grumbled.

“I wanted to ask you something, but you sidetracked me,” he chuckled. He seemed to have recovered his good humor.

“Do you have a multiple personality disorder?” I asked severely.

“You’re doing it again.”

I sighed. “Fine then. What do you want to ask?”

“I was wondering if, a week from Saturday – you know, the day of the spring dance -”

“Are you trying to be funny?” I interrupted him, wheeling toward him. My face got drenched as I looked up at his expression.

His eyes were wickedly amused. “Will you please allow me to finish?”

I bit my lip and clasped my hands together, interlocking my fingers, so I couldn’t do anything rash.

“I heard you say you were going to Seattle that day, and I was wondering if you wanted a ride.”

That was unexpected.

Q1: “Why won’t you leave me alone?” I grumbled. Do you think Bella really meant it when she asked Edward to leave her alone? Why or why not?

Q2: Why did Bella think that the only conclusion that was available, was that Edward regretted saving her?

Q3: What were your first impressions when Eric and Tyler both replied to Bella’s rejection with “next time” and “we still have prom” respectively, with regards to character analyzing as well as storyline wise?

Q4: Okay, once again, I haven’t read MS yet, so if the answer’s really there, whatever, ignore it! Problem is, why do you think Edward invited Bella to drive to Seattle with him, yet warned her to stay away?

I am so sorry people, the questions this time round aren’t so good. I’m rushing off to bed FYI, and I’ll be gone for about two days. Have fun replying to thin air! Right, okay kidding.

Twilight Online Book Discussion: Phenomenon

AREN’T YOU EXCITED? HERE COMES THE MOST DEFINING SCENE, AND IT’S FROM CHAPTER 3: PHENOMENON! It really is extraordinary.

Just before I heard the shattering crunch of the van folding around the truck bed, something hit me, hard, but not from the direction I was expecting. My head cracked against the icy blacktop, and I felt something solid and cold pinning me to the ground. I was lying on the pavement behind the tan car I’d parked next to. But I didn’t have a chance to notice anything else, because the van was still coming. It had curled gratingly around the end of the truck and, still spinning and sliding, was about to collide with me again.

A low oath made me aware that someone was with me, and the voice was impossible not to recognize. Two long, white hands shot out protectively in front of me, and the van shuddered to a stop a foot from my face, the large hands fitting providentially into a deep dent in the side of the van’s body.

Then his hands moved so fast they blurred. One was suddenly gripping under the body of the van, and something was dragging me, swinging my legs around like a rag doll’s, till they hit the tire of the tan car. A groaning, metallic thud hurt my ears, and the van settled, glass popping, onto the asphalt – exactly where, a second ago, my legs had been.

It was absolutely silent for one long second before the screaming began.

1. Hohoho, how do you think Tyler managed to lose control of his van other than because of the ice? (I know there’s a brief explanation in the chapter, but use your ~imagination~)

2. ‘”Hey, Edward, I’m really sorry -” Tyler began.

Edward lifted a hand to stop him.

“No blood, no foul.”‘
What other underlying meanings are there to Edward’s reply, whether he meant them or not?

3. We know that Edward didn’t know the real reason behind why he saved Bella but looking at his character, what do you think was the motive that made him act to shift her away and not get squished?

4. Why do you think Bella dreamt of Edward that night?

WOOT.

Twilight Online Book Discussion: Open Book

I know I am so late, was studying for a test (and secretly reading New Moon at the same time)! You can pelt me with eggs and throw spears at me now. *ducks* Anyway, welcome to Chapter 2: Open Book!

I was showing off, just a little. I’d already done this lab, and I knew what I was looking for. It should be easy. I snapped the first slide into place under the microscope and adjusted it quickly to the 40X objective. I studied the slide briefly.

My assessment was confident. “Prophase.”

“Do you mind if I look?” he asked as I began to remove the slide. His hand caught mine, to stop me, as he asked. His fingers were ice-cold, like he’d been holding them in a snowdrift before class. But that wasn’t why I jerked my hand away so quickly. When he touched me, it stung my hand as if an electric current had passed through us.

“I’m sorry,” he muttered, pulling his hand back immediately. However, he continued to reach for the microscope. I watched him, still staggered, as he examined the slide for an even shorter time than I had.

“Prophase,” he agreed, writing it neatly in the first space on our worksheet. He swiftly switched out the first slide for the second, and then glanced at it cursorily.

“Anaphase,” he murmured, writing it down as he spoke.

I kept my voice indifferent. “May I?”

Q1: Why do you think Bella wanted to show off?

Q2: What possible reasons led to Charlie becoming defensive and so uptight when Bella noted to him that “They… the kids… are a little different. They don’t seem to fit in very well at school.”?

Q3: When Edward questioned Bella about her move to Forks, why do you think he made assumptions and statements (“And you don’t like him [Phil]“, “And your mother sent you here so that she could travel with him) instead of asking questions?

Q4: After school, Edward was “staring intently” in Bella’s direction from his Volvo. Using your imagination, what do you think he was pondering over as he looked towards Bella?

Once again, I apologize for the Mega Late post! Now let your words run!

Twilight Online Book Discussion: First Sight

ourhappyplace
Beginning today, Bessy (that’s me!) will post a book discussion entry for every chapter in Twilight every Sunday. In each entry, I will include an excerpt from the chapter as well as a question. You can choose to reply to the question or just speak your mind about any part of the chapter. It’s a free-for-all kind of thing.

As this is a book discussion, do remember to check back every once in a while to see if anyone has replied to your comment! The rules are very simple: No quarrelling, no bashing, no hate. Everyone just enjoy yourselves and be open. :D

Today, I’ll be embarking on Chapter 1: First Sight.

I couldn’t stop myself from peeking occasionally through the screen of my hair at the strange boy next to me. During the whole class, he never relaxed his stiff position on the edge of his chair, sitting as far from me possible. I could see his hand on his left skin. This, too, he never relaxed. He had the long sleeves of his white shirt pushed up to his elbows, and his forearm was surprisingly hard and muscular beneath his light skin. He wasn’t nearly as slight as he’d looked next to his burly brother.

The class seemed to drag on longer than the others. Was it because the day was finally coming to a close, or because I was waiting for his tight fist to loosen? It never did; he continued to sit so still it looked like he wasn’t breathing. What was wrong with him? Was this his normal behaviour? I questioned my judgment on Jessica’s bitterness at lunch today. Maybe she was not as resentful as I’d thought.

It couldn’t have anything to do with me. He didn’t know me from Eve.

I peeked up at him one more time, and regretted it. He was glaring down at me again, his black eyes full of revulsion. As I flinched away from him, shrinking against my chair, the phrase if looks could kill suddenly rang through my mind.

At that moment, the bell rang loudly, making me jump, and Edward Cullen was out of his seat. Fluidly he rose – he was much taller than I’d thought – his back to me, and he was out the door before anyone else was out of their seat.

Q1: When Bella described that Edward was “was out the door before anyone else was out of their seat”, did you presume that he simply walked very quickly or he’d thrown in a bit of his powers and almost ran out of the room at superhuman speed?

YAY, NASH SAYS I CAN ADD IN MORE QUESTIONS, LOL. I shall try for a few fun ones, all right?
Q2: The story goes that the Cullens moved down to Forks from Alaska two years ago. Using your imagination, how do you think Jessica knew about that? Since, very obviously, the Cullens do not talk to the humans.

Q3: Do you think it would have been easier for Edward to kill Ms Cope and then Bella in the office, or the entire Biology class? You can interpret “easier” in whatever manner you wish, like with regards to his ability or how much less of a hassle it would have been to murder only Ms Cope. Any way you want to. :D

I swear I’m not being sadistic!

Happy Discussing!
