To help the actors and crew “see” the wolves, cows or large cardboard standees were used. They also used the potato, which is a big stand-in object that’s about the same size as a wolf and the actors can fight with it, wrestle with it and be hit by it.

You seem very attracted to roles in which you play someone who is defiant, constantly fighting for something—emotionally, physically. What is Mallory fighting for the hardest?
I think she’s just trying to survive. She’s had a rough upbringing, which has taken something from her on a really basic level. It’s hard for a young girl in the normal world, but put her on the streets…she doesn’t realize that she does actually need people, that she needs to have a capacity to trust, accept and love other people. She sees and tastes that with Doug, realizes she can have it, and she’s not dead yet.

When you put your heart and soul into something as intense as the duration of a film production, you become completely lost in it. You focus on doing your very best to get it right each day and you work on this for so long that you assume an ownership of it.
When shooting The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, I always felt an awareness of how many people this film would reach and as a result, knew that this film did not just belong to myself, the producers and the studio, but more so, to all of you, the fans of The Twilight Saga.
At the end of the day, after all the hard work is done, all that’s left is the film itself, and your overwhelmingly positive and supportive responses have made me feel like we must have done something right. As a filmmaker, this is a rare and strange feeling of connection with an audience of which I will never forget and I thank you all for it.

A) How do you think Eclipse ranks against the other two films?
Taylor Lautner: It is definitely my favorite.
Robert Pattinson: I don’t like it as much. {Laughs} Could you imagine if I meant that?
Kristen Stewart: It’s always hard because you’re so close to it. I run this really intense list of, like, checks and balances to make sure everything has come across. But I know I pulled less of my hair out {watching} it.
B) Speaking of your hair, you definitely don’t play with yours as much in this movie.
Stewart: {Laughs} No, because it’s not my hair.
Lautner: Nope, it was a wig.
Stewart: I’m just going to be really honest right now: Yeah, I finally dropped my tic.
C) The emotional scenes in Eclipse really play well, I think.
Stewart: This is the first time that Bella actually indulges Jacob and sees that there are two very desireable paths ahead of her and not just one. It takes kissing him to see that.
Lautner: {To Pattinson} Are you lifting weights?
Stewart: Actually, he has been.
Lautner: Seriously, he was just {flexing}, and the bicep was bulging.

Alice doesn’t seem to fight like the other vampires. What makes her different?
”Alice is lithe, like a dancer, so we did much more of a Cirque du Soleil spin on Alice’s fighting, which was really cool. I grew up with a martial-arts background, plus I did acrobatics and tae kwon do. It was great to get back to that world.”
JACKSON RATHBONE
You’re Southern like your character, yet we didn’t hear much of the accent until this movie.
”In the first films he doesn’t have much dialogue, so we pulled it back since he’s supposed to be a high school kid [in Washington] and you can’t have a Texas accent. It’s only when he’s barking orders and leading an army that he’s comfortable and the accent comes out. It was definitely fun to be able to let down the blocks that Jasper puts up to keep himself sane in the vegetarian vampire way of life. I finally let the accent go a little bit.”
BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD
With only one week to prepare for your role, how did you get up to speed on the franchise so quickly?
”I had already read all the books and I had seen Twilight, like, four or five times in the theater. One of my closest friends even made me a stack of Post-it notes for my birthday with Robert Pattinson’s face on it, because he knows how obsessed I am with Edward Cullen. I love him.”

Actor Jackson Rathbone has spent the better part of two blockbuster films looking like he’s in pain. Terrible pain.
Now, he’s about to be rewarded for all of that grimacing.
In “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” opening Wednesday, Rathbone finally steps out of the background and into the spotlight as vampire Jasper Cullen.
Audiences will learn about Jasper’s pre-vampire life as a Civil War soldier, as the “quiet Cullen” becomes central to the story. Jasper is key in defeating a growing threat to the lives of characters fans have grown to love at a feverish pitch, including vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and his human love Bella (Kristen Stewart).
“I’m really excited about delving into Jasper’s back story,” Rathbone says, calling from the West Coast on a recent Saturday night to discuss “Eclipse,” the third movie based on the best-selling novels by Stephenie Meyer. “I won’t spoil it too much for you, but we definitely do see Jasper as a human and get to see Jasper turned into a vampire and living the vampire life before he met Alice [Cullen].”
