New Moon News

Brazil’s Globo.com has video of the New York premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon and the cast were asked about they’re obsessions.

EW did an interview with Michael Sheen who plays Aro. The writer is pretty oblivious of Sheen’s credentials in the horror-action genre. The guy played Lucian the Werewolf in the Underworld series. And to call the Twilight Series frothy? Michael Sheen obviously has more insight puts it right with the quoted text.

What do you think audiences are responding to with Twilight?
I think it’s a whole combination of things coming together. Especially for adolescent girls and also for older audiences, Stephenie [Meyer] takes the incredibly powerful experiences you have as a teenager and treats them absolutely fearlessly and gives them the respect they deserve. The first book and film are about the first time you fall in love. And New Moon is all about the first time your heart is broken. These are some of the most powerful experiences you can have in your life, regardless of your age. And there is a tendency to kind of trivialize those things as you get older, to kind of be patronizing about those things. And Stephenie treats them absolutely seriously. She also, very cleverly in a way, said that the vampires are stunningly gorgeous as a way to lure their prey. That’s very clever because in casting the film you have very beautiful people who are very good as well.

Read it all here.

Happing.com from Spain asked Rob why he doesn’t Tweet or do Facebook and a couple more interesting questions. Thanks to Robert Pattinson Life’s pinkvintage for the translations.

Questions translated – by pinkvintage

1.- You once said that if there was ever a fight between Edward and Jacob, Edward would be the winner. Could Robert also win over Taylor?
2.- There’s something that intrigues me, if Jacob is in love with Bella, and he’s also really hot, why do you think Bella doesn’t like him? Could it be because he doesn’t own a Volvo?
3.- Could you tell us how do you deal with going out on the streets and running into a lot of girls who are screaming how hot you are? Do you sign autographs for all of them or do you just run out of there screaming ‘Jumanji!!!’
4.- Yesterday I was watching some interviews on YouTube and I found one that happened during the Teen Choice Awards in which Kristen was asked where you were. She said that you were probably in the bathroom looking in the mirror and playing with your hair. Do you really spend that much time on your hair?
5.- Could you tell us a funny anecdote that happened during the filming of the movie?
6.- A couple of hours ago I was live tweeting all of what was going on during the press conference. Aren’t you interested in sharing your thoughts with your fans through Twitter or Facebook? The Jonas Bros, who were here yesterday, are already doing it.

Rob talks about stealing on the set, crashing the green Porsche while in LA and the character he would love to play in New Moon:

Thank you Cullen News!

Meanwhile Entertainment Weekly sits down with Tish Monaghan – the Costume Designer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Eclipse as well. If you’re interested to know more about the fashion behind New Moon, check out the interview:

Why couldn’t he (Edward) remain shirtless for the indoor fight scene? Why put on the robe?
Originally, the guards who grab him were supposed to be coming from the outside — that’s why they give him the robe. But the setting was changed, and they grab him on the inside. So why do they hand him this robe? Because, quite honestly, it looks very cool fighting with this long, flowing garment, and it does hide pads, protect him.

Last question: What can you tease about the costumes in Eclipse?
We go back to the 1700s and do a complete Quileute tribe. I had to go to museums and pour over clothing that was dug up from burial sites, and I went into diaries of sailors to read what their first encounters were with the Indians on the Pacific Northwest coast. Then we did vampires from the Civil War era, then we did the 1930s, then we did our contemporary world, then we did fantasy Volturi flying over on a jet to Forks, Washington. Then we did an army of vampire newborns. It’s pretty cool stuff.

Next, how about reading up on this interview from San Francisco Chronicle with Phil Tippet (picture below), the Special Effects Innovator for The Twilight Saga: New Moon:

Q: Which movie had tighter security on the set, “Return of the Jedi” or “New Moon”?

A: For “Return of the Jedi,” I was totally oblivious to all the fandom. I didn’t notice anything, and most of the work was done on pretty secured sets. For “New Moon,” it was unbelievable.

It was like a CIA operation. Some of the locations we would go to, the production would be so concerned about fooling the paparazzi, they would take the arrows pointing to the location and turn them the other way. We were actually getting lost.

Q: Did you do much wolf-related research for the movie?

A: We nailed it down early that these were not going to be traditional beast-y horror movie things. … We watched a lot of documentaries and looked at every single picture book out there on wolves.

My co-supervisor, Matt Jacobs, took a bunch of the art department and animators to a wolf preserve outside of Los Angeles. They got into a pen about the size of this room with about 10 wolves and just spent the afternoon with them.

Eclipse News

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will hit theaters on 30th June 2010. YEP! ALL OF US KNEW THAT ALREADY :D Here’s the poster for the third film of The Twilight Saga series in HQ.

Rotten Tomatoes has 5 Facts About The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

Fact #1: It’s Darker

The brand new poster for Eclipse (above) hints at a darker tone with its brooding storm clouds. With 30 Days of Night director David Slade at the helm, it’s unsurprising. “Every movie is different because we work with a different director on each one, which I love,” Taylor Lautner tells RT. “David Slade is perfect for the third film because it’s darker. Eclipse was my favourite book.”

Ashley Greene, who plays vampire Alice, tells RT that Slade isn’t just a prince of darkness. “David is actually hysterical,” she laughs, “He has such a dry sense of humour that sometimes you don’t know if he’s kidding or not. Eclipse will be amazing because he has made it far edgier and more dramatic. It’s going to look very cool.”

Chris Weitz has done yet another great interview ( We officially heart Chris Weitz!!) this time with EW.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was your biggest fear going into [opening] weekend?
CHRIS WEITZ:
I didn’t have any particular fears. The tracking numbers were enough to indicate that I wouldn’t be letting the studio down. But if one could imagine their biggest fears, it would be complete rejection of the movie, by the fans. What I’ve realized over the last week is I won’t necessarily get good reviews for this movie. Having swallowed that, this was made for the fans, and if you don’t get it, then you don’t get it.

Did the negative reviews surprise you?
Nothing surprises me in terms of reviews. Having been a reviewer myself, there are only two ways to spin this story. You can either be the one guy who says this is a great movie, or more likely, take a more jaundiced view of the whole thing. And given the media blitz that has accompanied New Moon, it’s rather unsurprising. I do wish there was more appreciation for cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe. I think he’s a genius and I think he made something beautiful.

A lot of fans say they like the movie more than the book, that New Moon was their least favorite book in the series.

New Moon takes a lot of time to read and you have a lot of time without Edward in the picture. And here in the compressed scenario of the movie, there is less time without RPatz. And the fact that Taylor [Lautner] does such a great job, to the reading audience who’s been very skeptical of him, here he is in the flesh, and it’s quite something.

It’s interesting then that you went forward with another book adaptation with another studio, considering how badly it went the last time.
I really liked the actors. I saw the first movie and I thought there was something special about Kristen [Stewart] , Rob [Pattinson], and Taylor. I liked the emotional tones to the book. It was stuff I knew how to do. I had this theory that if you stay true to the book, you would win. You would not only win with the fans, but other people will get what the fans care about. If the box office tells us anything, then it’s a win. It’s made more in its first day then the entire domestic run of Golden Compass. It’s extraordinary.

What were the highest and lowest points of making New Moon?
The lows had to be shooting at 5 a.m. in a forest and struggling to get certain shots so a sequence would string together properly. It was a very cold forest in British Columbia, and we knew we’d have another night shoot just like it the next day. The highs were the moments of real identification with the actors. With Taylor, the moments early on when he realized he was going to do it. That was very gratifying to me.

New Moon News

Rolling Stone Magazine has published their exclusive interview with Taylor Lautner this month.

Don’t you think that when some fans see New Moon, they may be disappointed, because you’re kind of the villain in a way.
I have some pretty passionate team Jacob fans [laughs].

Right. But you’re also the obstacle getting in the way of the great romance between Bella and Edward.
I can see where you’re coming from. The thing is, Jacob and Edward are two completely different guys. They are opposites. And it’s just what kind of girl you are. If you like that more mysterious, dangerous type, then that’s one guy. I personally love Jacob and Bella’s relationship, and how they began as friends. They are so much more open, and can tell each other anything. And Bella and Edward’s relationship, it’s always tense. It’s always serious. But Jacob and Bella’s friendship starts growing stronger and stronger and you just wonder if they can go past friends. It looks like that at some points.

And then Bella is always lying to Edward so she can see you. This is supposed to be like true love forever, so why can’t she just be honest?
You know, she’s serious with Edward and then she meets best friend Jacob. She gets confused.

But you’re not really her friend. You have an agenda with her, and you’re always making snide comments about Edward.
If I was Jacob, and I feel like I have lived as him, it gets so annoying. Because she’s in the car with you one moment, about ready to kiss you and then she leaves and is with Edward. And then she’s back with you, you know.

Head on to Rolling Stone Magazine for the whole interview and Taylor’s photoshoot gallery.

TIME Magazine has another article about The Twilight Saga: New Moon setting records at the box-office.

For now, though, New Moon is the big news. The international grosses will also be massive. The first film earned $192.7 million in North America and almost exactly the same abroad. The worldwide five-day total for New Moon(which opened two days earlier abroad) is already at $258.8 million; expect a final worldwide gross to near $700 million. The thing’s a phenomenon, and all the analysis of its popularity can’t explain or diminish it. Sometimes the best strategy for canny film people is to step out of the way and let a hurricane sweep by. Nobody knows anything, except the customers. And you could bet your shirt on that.

Read the whole story here. Also check out their gallery of New Moon characters – we love Victoria’s portrait!

TIME Magazine have also interviewed Robert Pattinson and Chris Weitz.

Q&A: Robert Pattinson

Seemingly overnight, Robert Pattinson went from playing Voldemort’s roadkill in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire to being the immortal half of one of the hottest screen couples of all time. He spoke with TIME about how he landed the role of Twilight‘s Byronic vampire Edward Cullen, what it’s like to be a generational crush and how to walk unmolested along the streets of Vancouver.

You took on an edgy vampire movie and it’s become this. Did you know what you were signing up for?
I had no idea it was going to be like this. I really had no idea until … I guess I still don’t. The time that it hit me really was when we were shooting in Italy and the emotional reaction — it wasn’t just screaming. It was like people were so intently listening and watching. After every take there was polite applause. And it wasn’t hysteria. It was literally devotion to the characters. It was amazing. I haven’t felt that in any other situation.

…Why are America and the world so mental about it?
I was just in Japan, but when I first went there in February, the people who went to the fan events there were mainly people who went to American schools. This time it was an entirely Japanese audience. No one could really speak English, but they reacted in the same way as they have around the world. Even the distributor was saying, Japanese audiences don’t react like this. And they were stunned by the whole thing.

There must be this weird, primal thing in people that they react to. There are so many love stories that come out. So many vampire stories that come out. Even the load of vampire stories coming out now have the exact same story line. This doesn’t have the same reaction. I think it’s all about being part of a club. People used to say it was a guilty pleasure. But I don’t even think it is that anymore. I think people genuinely appreciate that they are part of something.

… A whole generation will remember you as Edward. You’re a generational crush. Is that hard to live up to or difficult to accept?
There’s no living up to it. I think the major fear is just fighting too hard against it. Most people who have a downfall from a like situation is when they do try to fight, and fight and fight: I’m not this teenybopper person, blah, blah, blah. Even if a lot of people see me and the franchise as like that, I never have, at any point. But I don’t feel the need to fight against it. I’ve never tried to pander to any kind of audience. I’ve tried to make the films as intelligent and uncheesy as you could. And I’ve tried to make them the best they can be. I’ve never thought about it any other way. So I hope that pays off.

Q&A with Chris Weitz

True, he’d already made one iconic teen movie. But Twilight fans were initially shocked when American Pie director Chris Weitz was handed the reins forNew Moon. TIME spoke with Weitz about his immersion in the Twilightworld, dealing with Internet rumors and winning over the fans in the run-up to New Moon‘s Nov. 20 release.

How much do you pay attention to what the fans are saying on the Web?
During shooting I tried to not go onto the Internet at all if possible. I started to pay attention to fan reaction to the trailers that have been out and what kind of stuff they like, just in order to get a temperature of where things were heading. I think you end up being a politician responding to polls if you pay too much attention to the Internet. Because it’s a quick way to convince yourself that one particular person who happens to be Twittering at the moment just happens to be the authority. I try to put out fires when bizarre rumors get started. One rumor I addressed was that the Volturi scenes were supposed to be set in a bathhouse with everyone naked.

Real or not, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are reported breathlessly to be a couple — does that help the franchise?
I don’t know whether it helps it or not. I just know that it will be around as long as they keep making these movies. People always want the stars of movies to fall in love with one another. There’s no calculated effort to make it seem that way on the part of Summit Marketing. You really want it to be about the characters themselves. It neither helps nor hurts. It just gives fans waiting in between movies something to talk about.

Lastly, The New Moon cast Twittered yesterday and today to thank fans for their supporton Summit Entertainment’s Official Twitter pageTwilight

The No. 1 domestic debut for Summit Entertainment’s “New Moon” was more than twice the $69.6 million haul over the same weekend last year for “Twilight,” the first in the franchise based on Stephenie Meyer’s novels.

NEW MOON NEWS – New Moon Tears,Breaks, Shreds, Smashes,Shatters = Decimates Opening Weekend US Box Office Records!!!

YEP! You’ve heard of it and you’ve read about it and now we’re bring you MORE of it!! WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!

From MTV News

1. “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” ($72.7 million)
2. “The Blind Side” ($10.9 million)
3. “2012″ ($8.1 million)
4. “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” ($3.6 million)
5. “Planet 51″ ($3.2 million)

With “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” in over 4,000 theaters nationwide, there was virtually no chance that the continued romance of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan would fall anywhere short of first place — but perhaps no one could have predicted just how far ahead of the competition “New Moon” would end up.

The second “Twilight” installment has already shattered records and expectations by earning $26.3 million from midnight showings alone, decimating the record previously held by “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Additionally, “New Moon” enjoyed the single most lucrative opening day in the history of cinema with $62.2 million, a record previously held by “The Dark Knight.” Combined with the midnight intake, “New Moon” has already earned $72.7 million — and the weekend isn’t even over.

LA Times

Though the debut day for “New Moon” was unprecedented, the full opening weekend will probably be merely massive. Ticket sales for the first “Twilight” film, which opened on the same weekend last year, plunged 41% on the Saturday after it opened. “New Moon” will probably see an even bigger drop, given the massive amount of interest that helped it set a record as the biggest pre-seller on online ticketing services Fandango and MovieTickets.com.

Nonetheless, a total weekend gross of more than $110 million is all but certain and more than $120 million is very possible. That would give “New Moon” the biggest domestic weekend gross for any film this year, the biggest for an opening outside the summer movie season, and one of the top five of all time, not accounting for inflation.

Ticket sales from the 25 other countries where “New Moon” is opening this weekend will almost certainly push the worldwide weekend gross to more than $150 million.

Summit spent only $50 million to make “New Moon,” including tax incentives from Canada, where it was produced. Even including marketing costs, the picture is certain to be profitable based on ticket sales alone, even before Summit starts making money from DVD and other post-theatrical markets.

Studios usually keep about half the revenue a movie collects from theatrical ticket sales.

ABC News

The vampire romance sequel earned $72.7 million across the United States and Canada on Friday, a figure that includes record-breaking midnight sales of $26.3 million, said the film’s closely held distributor Summit Entertainment.

The old record for a single-day opening was $62.2 million, held by last year’s “Batman” sequel “The Dark Knight,” which went on to become the second-biggest grossing movie of all time in North America before accounting for inflation.

Such heights could be difficult for the “Twilight” sequel to attain. Still, industry observers expect it could finish up with upwards of $125 million for the weekend once Saturday sales data and Sunday estimates are issued early on Sunday.

Variety.com

The opening day for “New Moon” posted more than a 100% gain over the first Friday of “Twilight” which made $36 million a year ago and a three-day weekend of $69.6 million.

For a franchise that has clearly targeted females, “New Moon’s” first day is so exceptional that it’s probable that the film played beyond its core crowd to males. However, Summit plans to release the pic’s moviegoing demos, as well as international results, in its three-day estimate report tomorrow. Ever since the first installment finished its play in theaters, the production of “New Moon” has garnered non-stop headlines on glossy covers and fansites with the media savoring details on the film as well as its cast members Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

California Chronicles

Manager Gary Burgess said: “We had a lot of hysterical girls. It was quite manic. When we opened yesterday we still had screams.

“The only thing I could compare it to is like girls at a pop concert.”

Lorna McFadzean, general manager at the Odeon in East Kilbride, said the film’s opening days have been phenomenal: “I can’t remember seeing anything like this in my time at the cinema. It’s busier than Harry Potter and Star Wars.

“We expected our audiences to be mostly teenage girls but we have had older people, couples, groups of guys.” Tim Richards, CEO of Vue Entertainment cinemas, said the movie is massive: “These were the largest attended midnight shows we have ever done.”Independents also saw a rush. Andrew Poole, boss of The Pavilion in Galashiels in the Borders called New Moon “the most popular film we have ever had”.

It shattered opening day records in America, beating the sixth Harry Potter film and The Dark Knight.

ProNetworks.org

SATURDAY NUMBERS: Early estimates show The Twilight Saga: New Moon taking in another $43M on Saturday. Adding in Sunday projections means a $140M weekend may be taking shape.

This would translate into a 40% drop from Friday to Saturday, about the exact same percentage decrease Twilight had one year ago (down 40.8% Saturday, down 41.9% Sunday). Adding the $43M estimate to Friday’s official number of $72.7 brings the total to $115.7M. Another 40% drop going into Sunday is projected to yield in about $24M, based on advance sales, tracking polls, and other industry formulas. That would bring the weekend total to around $140M and put New Moon in third place overall for all-time opening weekends, behind The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3 but ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

These numbers are not official and are only estimates based on early reports. However, these preliminary figures are usually fairly close to the final data.

New Moon Opening Night: From Britain to China – fans are going crazy.

“New Moon” was the fastest advance-selling film of the year in Britain, exceeding the £1 million ($1.6 million) mark, according to the country’s largest cinema chain, Odeon.

In India, teenager Ritisha Mishra was so outraged at having been bypassed by the first movie that she rallied likeminded partisans online – and galvanized distributor PVR into bringing both the first and second films to the big screen over the next two weeks.

And in China, where at least one of the books in the series has perched atop the bestseller list for nearly a year, hundreds of thousands of admirers have been soaking up pirated versions of the first movie, which opens in general release only next week.

Ursula Mackenzie, CEO at Little-Brown, Twilight’s UK publishers, told the Daily Telegraph that the success of the franchise spoke to the broad appeal of Meyer’s focus: “She touches on themes – rebellion, angst, and finding your place in the world against tough odds – that resonate with girls and boys, teens and adults.”

Rea, a South African 8th-grader, says the book series is popular among teenagers because, “It has romance, it has trust and friendship, love, and hatred, it has it all.”

Dhalyn, an American 8th-grader who attends school in Johannesburg, is impatiently rereading “New Moon’s” 500-plus pages as she awaits the movie, which won’t open till Dec. 4.

She says it’s all about the storyline. “[It] has that kind of a hook to it that makes you want to read all the books,” she says. “There’s not a lot of stories about girls falling in love with a vampire.”

“I would say over 60 percent of the readers are middle school and high school girls,” says Chang Xiaowu, deputy marketing director of Jieli, the publishing house that bought the Chinese rights. “Edward [Cullen] is a vampire, he is dangerous. Girls love to fall in love with this kind of dangerous boyfriend.”

Edward’s appeal reaches beyond teenagers here, though. Many of his fans are young women in their twenties. “He is supposed to be the evil one, but actually he is a good person,” says Sun Junmei, a 26-year-old financial consultant in Beijing who downloaded audio versions of three of the books.

KansasCity.com

Robert Pattinson IS Edward Cullen (sometimes)

“Rob shifted into character and my jaw dropped open,” Meyer said in a fan forum that’s linked on her Web site.

“Suffice it to say, he really nailed it. He’s not playing a version of Edward, he’s playing Edward. There is still quite a difference between Rob’s Edward and the Edward in my head, but there are moments when they look eerily similar. I’m still not sure how he does it, but I’m glad he can. As for emotions, I think he does a great job.”

In the meantime, Meyer says she loves “New Moon,” which opened last night at midnight, and says she can’t name just one favorite part.

“I love so many things. Bella’s and Edward’s first conversation in the parking lot … the painting (of the Volturi — it comes alive!) … Jessica’s monologue … the scenes in Jacob’s garage … the first time you see the werewolves!! … Jacob in Bella’s room — thanks, Chris! (that’s Chris Weitz, the director) … the underwater moment … what you see while Thom Yorke’s amazing song is playing … everything in Italy … and I could go on. It’s all so good.
