Twilight Book Discussion: Port Angeles

I started with the most undemanding. Or so I thought. “Why are you in Port Angeles?”
He looked down, folding his large hands together slowly on the table. His eyes flickered up at me from under his lashes, the hint of a smirk on his face.
“Next.”
“But that’s the easiest one,” I objected.
“Next,” he repeated.
“Okay, then.” I glared at him, and continued slowly. “Let’s say, hypothetically of course, that…someone…could know what people are thinking, read minds, you know – with a few exceptions.”
“Just one exception,” he corrected, “hypothetically.”
“All right, with one exception, then.” I was thrilled that he was playing along, but I tried to seem casual. “How does that work? What are the limitations? How would…that someone…find someone else at exactly the right time? How would he know she was in trouble?” I wondered if my convoluted questions even made sense.
“Hypothetically?” he asked.
“Sure.”
“Well, if…that someone…”
“Let’s call him ‘Joe,’” I suggested.
He smiled wryly. “Joe, then. If Joe had been paying attention, the timing wouldn’t have needed to be quite so exact.” He shook his head, rolling his eyes. “Only you could get into trouble in a town this small. You would have devastated their crime rate statistics for a decade, you know.”
“We were speaking of a hypothetical case,” I reminded him frostily.
He laughed at me, his eyes warm.
HELLO EVERYONE, I AM FINALLY BACK! No, the worst is not over yet. I’m simply here because I have time, and even so, I am late by a day once again. I don’t think you could ever trust me to be on time ever again.
Thanks Nash for helping out with last week’s discussion, and I’ll reply to it and the previous ones after doing this.
So, in the meantime, welcome to Chapter 8: Port Angeles! The very chapter where there were two pivotal points. 1) Edward saving Bella from the potential criminals and 2) Bella extracting the facts out from Edward. There’s more in the next chapter though. Hee.
Questions, questions!
1. Let’s have some fun this week. If your prom was themed “semiformal”, what would you wear there? Bonus cookies for pictures! (Note: No quoting of any item from the movie.)
2. ‘”That’s why Lauren doesn’t like you.’” Jessica said that, after spilling to Bella that Tyler has been going around saying that he’s bringing her to prom. Now, having once discussed Lauren’s personality, do you agree with Jessica?
3. Bella was getting to screaming, and recalling the fighting techniques. Why do you think she didn’t immediately do either of them, but delayed a little?
4. ‘”Er…sure,” Jessica breathed.’ If you were Jessica, would you really pretend to not have eaten just so you could be with Edward and Bella? (And subsequently eat again?)
5. Ignore this question if it’s been explained in Midnight Sun. Why do you think Edward chose not to answer Bella’s first question?
6. “The waitress appeared as if she’d been called. Or listening.” If you were the waitress, what would you have made out of the situation and the conversation?
Most number of questions ever, so far. Hoping to break the record in the future!

Any of these. And yes, I’m serious about the second last suit.
2. NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT. I think she only quoted that reason because all Jessica is interested in, is gossip. And that’s the only gossipworthy thing of all the reasons that Lauren dislikes Bella for.
3. Bella was getting to screaming, and recalling the fighting techniques. Why do you think she didn’t immediately do either of them, but delayed a little?
She’s afraid she’d screw up, like how she had messed her chances with the hoarse threat to the men, which they simply laughed off.
4. ‘”Er…sure,” Jessica breathed.’ If you were Jessica, would you really pretend to not have eaten just so you could be with Edward and Bella? (And subsequently eat again?)
Sadly, no. As much of a gossipmonger I am, I wouldn’t want to grow fat. I really wouldn’t. Nor would I wish to die by an exploding stomach in front of the most gorgeous guy in school.
5. Ignore this question if it’s been explained in Midnight Sun. Why do you think Edward chose not to answer Bella’s first question?
He thought that’d be easier ones coming up, that’s what I feel.
6. “The waitress appeared as if she’d been called. Or listening.” If you were the waitress, what would you have made out of the situation and the conversation?
That the guy is weird and has some awesome mind-reading ability and happens to be very hot, but besides that, there’s something strained going on between that plain girl and him so I think I’d prefer to stay out of trouble.

1. Perhaps a long ankle-length dress, never disappoints.

And also the cocktail/prom dresses

Love this question! (L)
2. Maybe yes and no. Because being a newbie there, Bella might not know Lauren’s true personality and Jessica might be telling the truth (since Jess and Lauren are closer), however Jessica might be stretching the truth to the point she just wants to have some hot news to gossip on. Tsk.
3. She was thinking on doing it right I guess, in a way that she only have that ONE shot to take them down, literally. HAHHA. Or she’s just thinking too much lah!
4. Urm, probably yes and no. Yes being that since I’m the nosy gossipmonger, I’ll probably get that chance to get this tiny close to be in Edward’s presence, and be dazzled over and over again by his eyes and voice. Or perhaps not as it’ll be too embarrassing if he noticed that I repeatedly wiped my mouth of drool. And I won’t have much to talk to him, I’ll rather be the listener, for obvious reasons!
5. AWWW Edward loves playing the guessing game! HEHEHE How charming. Ahh probably he’s not bothered by Bella’s stupid question. LOL.
6. I would take advantage of the matter to “tell” him that I would want a date with him. End of story.

1. Heehee Bruna Tenorio. I love the first and second last dresses! YES FASHION FTW.
6. ROFL WTH HAHAHAHA.

I have no clue. I’m not a very prom person.
Something simple, no exaggerated stuff.

I don’t really plan to go for prom after O levels end. It’s really scary!
2. ‘”That’s why Lauren doesn’t like you.’” Jessica said that, after spilling to Bella that Tyler has been going around saying that he’s bringing her to prom. Now, having once discussed Lauren’s personality, do you agree with Jessica?
Hahaha, no not really. I would say the Lauren’s hate for Bella was further enhanced. She doesn’t like Bella in the first place because she got all the attention, including Jessica’s, which Lauren can’t tell her. So she has got to assume that that’s the reason.
3. Bella was getting to screaming, and recalling the fighting techniques. Why do you think she didn’t immediately do either of them, but delayed a little?
For the screaming part, maybe she was too scared. I remembered something about her trying to build up for a scream. She maybe she was waiting for that moment, but it never came in the end cause she had no voice. HAHAHA. Anyway, the fighting techniques part, well, she couldn’t fight very well. And she had to get the guys closer before she could actually attack, seeing how clumsy she was.
4. ‘”Er…sure,” Jessica breathed.’ If you were Jessica, would you really pretend to not have eaten just so you could be with Edward and Bella? (And subsequently eat again?)
No, it’ll be so awkward! I bet Bella will shoot impolite glances at me for doing so. Man, eating again will make me grow fat too. But it’s a potential juicy topic that I can talk about in school and make Bella known to be unavailable among the guys. I can have a chance with Mike! (sounds so gross, ugh)
5. Ignore this question if it’s been explained in Midnight Sun. Why do you think Edward chose not to answer Bella’s first question?
He was still contemplating whether or not to tell Bella the truth at that point of time.
6. “The waitress appeared as if she’d been called. Or listening.” If you were the waitress, what would you have made out of the situation and the conversation?
ZILTCH!

WHY! THAT’S SO SAD. I’m in the prom committee in my own school and it’s awesome.
True true! I think you’re very right.
No, it’ll be so awkward! I bet Bella will shoot impolite glances at me for doing so.
Why? Bella doesn’t really care. I mean, she liked Edward but she wasn’t really that possessive.
He was still contemplating whether or not to tell Bella the truth at that point of time.
That’s exactly what I thought! – Jessica
ZILTCH!
LOL YOU ARE SO SPASTIC.

“WHY! THAT’S SO SAD. I’m in the prom committee in my own school and it’s awesome.
”
Hahaha, because I get really nervous at these kind of events! PLUS, my really girly-girlfriends were talking OCB-ish about the hair, clothes, shoes, etc. It’s really scaring me! I really can’t stand it, I was suffering in that conversation!
“Why? Bella doesn’t really care. I mean, she liked Edward but she wasn’t really that possessive.”
Well, she wanted to talk to Edward badly in private after what happened right? It’s not about the possession(yet), but more about wanting to talk to him privately as Jessica can’t possibly EVER know. Anyway, Jessica is really thick-skinned, so playing gooseberry to the two probably won’t make her feel awkward, at all.
I’m spastic? HAHAHA, I’m not!
February 18, 2009 at 7:03 pm
OH MAN. I DON’T CARE. I’LL FORCE YOU TO GO FOR PROM.
more about wanting to talk to him privately as Jessica can’t possibly EVER know
Ooooooooooh, right, I’d forgotten about that.
February 19, 2009 at 4:33 pm
1.
2. Not entirely. That could be the icing on the cake, so-to-speak. I think Lauren loves attention. So, when Bella comes into school she automatically doesn’t like her with all the attention she’s getting, which now equals less attention on her. Then when Tyler states she’s going to prom with her, that just really pisses her off.
3. I suppose it’s a hard situation to be in, you’re almost in shock, not knowing how to respond. Thinking which one is going to be the best; screaming, fighting, both at the same time?
4. No, I wouldn’t.
5. Ignore this question if it’s been explained in Midnight Sun. Why do you think Edward chose not to answer Bella’s first question?
He probably doesn’t want to look like a stalker, which is reasonable. It would give away a lot of his secrets if he did. He was contemplating whether to tell her or not, figured he’d let her try and guess- he does this a lot.
6. “The waitress appeared as if she’d been called. Or listening.” If you were the waitress, what would you have made out of the situation and the conversation?
Knowing everything I do now I would steal him away, as if I could with my little strength. Buttt for real, if I heard what they were talking about I’d probably be like “wow, he’s super gorgeous but absolutely crazy”
February 20, 2009 at 12:25 am
I’ll fight!
I’ll scream!
I’ll run away from eeeevil Bessy!
AHHHH!!!
Anyway, I know I’ve asked this multiple of times, but do we need credit cards for pre-ordering? I obviously don’t have one, and my parents would NEVER, let me repeat, NEVER let me use their credit cards. How am I to secure my purchase for the twilight DVD ?! D:
