Twilight Book Discussion: Blood Type

OMG, ONE OF MY FAVOURITE CHAPTERS HAHAHA! This is such a cute turning point that, sadly, had to be retrieved out from the movie. Anyway, I sincerely apologize for my lack of replies to the last book discussion entry. If you didn’t know yet, I have commented back already. If you wish to continue discussing from there, I don’t mind!

So now, one week later, let’s move on to Chapter 5: Blood Type. AHHHH ONE OF MY FAVOURITE CHAPTERS!

Suddenly the sidewalk disappeared from beneath me. My eyes flew open in shock. Edward had scooped me up in his arms, as easily as if I weighed ten pounds instead of a hundred and ten.

“Put me down!” Please, please let me not vomit on him. He was walking before I was finished talking.

“Hey!” Mike called, already ten paces behind us.

Edward ignored him. “You look awful,” he told me, grinning.

“Put me back on the sidewalk,” I moaned. The rocking movement of his walk was not helping. He held me away from his body, gingerly, supporting all my weight with just his arms – it didn’t seem to bother him.

“So you faint at the sight of blood?” he asked. This seemed to amuse him.

I didn’t answer. I closed my eyes again and fought the nausea with all my strength, clamping my lips together.

“And not even your own blood,” he continued, enjoying himself.

I didn’t know how he opened the door while carrying me, but it was suddenly warm, so I knew we were inside.

“Oh my,” I heard a female voice gasp.

“She fainted in Biology,” Edward explained.

I opened my eyes. I was in the office, and Edward was striding past the front counter toward the nurse’s door. Ms Cope, the redheaded front office receptionist, ran ahead of him to hold it open. The grandmotherly nurse looked up from a novel, astonished, as Edward swung me into the room and placed me gently on the crackly paper that covered the brown vinyl mattress on the one cot. Then he moved to stand against the wall as far across the narrow room as possible.

“She’s just a little faint,” he reassured the startled nurse. “They’re blood typing in Biology.”

The nurse nodded sagely. “There’s always one.”

He muffled a snicker.

Q2: What do you think was the emotion (note: emotion, not feeling) that channelled Bella and made her raise her face to the rain outside the school building?

Q3: Edward asked, “Are you frightened of me now?” and Bella instantly answered, “No.” Why do you think Bella didn’t even pause to think through her answer?

Three questions only, but I want you guys to talk about this and more random stuff okay! Also, I apologize for the late posting of this, as I came home pretty late from school. But let the ~~bashing~~ ~~arguing~~ debating begin! LOL, whatever.

Before Edwards’ stare—- ‘I could not believe that he said that to me!!!! How wonderful! and romantic! and confusing!!!!’,'is that a joke?’,’ i want to cry..’
hehehe..I tried to spell out what Bella might be thinking in the most simplest form.Because I would be if im in her shoes.hehehe

The Stare—— ‘What?!!” ,’I want to cry..’,'Where the hell was he?’,'why is he staring?’,'OMG!he’s staring!’, ‘do i look okay?’ ,’ARGHHHH!!’,'Why didn’t he join his family?’ ‘Why is he sitting alone?’ ,’He wants me to stay away…should i go to him?’

The Wink——- ‘I should go to him.’

Question2:
She was Elated Nothing can ruin this.Even the rain.The,..’cold wet thing..rrrhhhh!!(movie line )

Question3:
BEcause she sort of given him the idea that he could be scary.(As in lying discreetly in that note,) if he thinks that she thinks that he’s frightening her,he would leave her alone and she’ll never see him again.She realise the risk and of course she wants him more than anything to just stay put,and wants her always in company, she reacted by just saying the most confident ‘No’Ever(hahaha) even before the question is finished.

I really really reaaly really really really ,really really really really really want this chapter to be on screen man! the whole entire thing.It would save them money too if that were the case.Right???sishhhh..

I wanted(pre-movie) soooooo bad to see how he scoop her and left Mike’s face!and that Edward yanking Bella’s jacket at the parking lot and drag her to the Volvo. Seriously,that would have been my fav scene.That would say a lot of Edward’s and Bella’s character too,but,Its all in my head now….wwuwuwuwu ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;(

Q1: Name the different emotions you think Bella would have felt in between the transition from when she thought Edward wasn’t in the cafeteria, to when Jessica said, “Edward Cullen is staring at you again.”
From disappointment, bitter and heavyhearted to obviously, surprise and elation.

Q2: What do you think was the emotion (note: emotion, not feeling) that channelled Bella and made her raise her face to the rain outside the school building?
Relief? Wait, is that an emotion?

Q3: Edward asked, “Are you frightened of me now?” and Bella instantly answered, “No.” Why do you think Bella didn’t even pause to think through her answer?
Hahaha, it’s in her nature for her to answer lightning quick to Edward’s rhetorical question! She’s obsessed with him, too infatuated to think through her answer.

I wanted this scene in too! It’d be so cool to see Bella being scooped up by Edward and see Mike’s face green with jealously, muahaha. I wanted to see the part where Bella looks up into the raining sky. Pity.

I agree with this part, but I think it’s leaning more towards like, she’s not afraid of him no matter what rather than she wants him to stay whether she’s frightened or not. Don’t you think so?

why confusion? Disappointment and bitter because she realized that Edward wasnt there. I agree with the puzzled part though. I bet she couldn’t figure what Edward wants with her, hahaha.

Haha, I was thinking relief from the chaos and gym thing. No? With the rain on her face, it’s sort of relaxing and I sort of feel that she feels relieved from the after-blood-typing and gym.

Elated bcos she sat with Edward at lunch,got winked ny him,got scooped by him,got bailed from getting back to Biology by him,walking out with him,just saw his wicked smile applied to that nurse,I think im gonna puke cos what i just experienced and dang this rain felt so good on washing it away…
uhm..maybe I should stop now.this is taking all the fun out.Its getting overrated. hehehe:)

thats another good way of putting it.But I think she has always been frightened on this relationship she has with him.Not because he might drink her someday(i mean accidentally kill her,not turn her)I mean love can only turn you into so many things.She knows how irresistible Edward is to her as much as her blood is to him. But she truly believes this is bigger than her own life.And believing that everything will be okay.She can’t explain it but its there.And somehow the way Edward asked her that question and she answered like that because she knows Edward was dancing along the lines of leaving.He said it soo many times that he’s bad (wow )
And he did leave once and thats enough to drive Bella crazy.

Maybe she wants him whether she’s frightened or not but deep down she’s confident in herself and Edward might not see that.And with this,she should be afraid.well..thats taking it out of context.We should say anxious…:)

from that blood thing.But apart of it is because of Edward.hehehehe..he scooped her!! lalalalala…:) She hated it(right)…but i know she’s loving it!!!hahahahaha.among so many other!
Seriously…im sad this wasn’t in the movie.I wonder what we’ll talk about now?

Hmm its like, she knew what she wanted. Love isn’t rational. So no matter what Edward was, she was all prepared for it. She wanted to love him. She was determined to “break” Edward out of his i’m-so-disgusted-by-myself-because-im-a-vampire-everyone-should-stay-away-from-me theory. Thus she didn’t mind about what he was, so she Hmm does this make sense to you? I hope it did :/

Because she thought at first that Edward wasn’t there. She didn’t question the fact that he wasn’t there, simply because he wasn’t at the table. She accepted it. If she still hoped he was there, she would have looked around the cafe. When that kind of disappointment sunk in, and suddenly Jessica not only announced his presence, but that he was looking at her, she must have gotten confused, yes?

With the rain on her face, it’s sort of relaxing and I sort of feel that she feels relieved from the after-blood-typing and gym.
Ah okay, that’s nice. IMO I actually thought it was both a mix of glee and melancholy. She felt happy, but in a sad kind of happy way. Like, she was happy that everything that happened was over, and that Edward was there with her, and she got to skip gym, but she was sad in a way because of everything she just went through. Okay, I can’t actually explain the sad part.

@ Kelly: LOL, sorry, but I said “emotions”. What do you think about the emotions she felt? Emotions = happy, sad, etc.

Yes omg it’ll be so hilarious and Kristen trying to look helpless… that is one priceless look I’ll never forget. And I think Edward with drool would look like Edward when he was in the rain and very wet.

I think you accidentally erased something between your “she” and “Hmm”, but anyway, I think that explains only your first sentence. I don’t understand how you managed to derive, from all this, the impression that Bella holds the key to this relationship. In what way does she take charge of all this? I mean, Edward may be self-hating, but he doesn’t lack self-confidence, see. He loves Bella, but he doesn’t *need* Bella to put him together.

But you know,at that time,she does not know Edward is a vampire.He hadn’t confirmed it yet.He just told her that he’s ‘dangerous’.So technically, Bella was not the one holding the ‘key’, YET.

Of course,, she was, in Midnight Sun,lol .But she did not know how Edward revolves around her like she’s the freaking universe.hehehehe

What if i told you that in a bizarre way he is??
I don’t know if im referring more to the movie,or the book,or midnight sun but Bella might not be the one whose holding the ‘key’ YET but it seems like without Bella,he would fall apart.(Wait,or New Moon here.But im gonna keep it in the line k?)

The moment Bella entered his nose…(hahahahahhaa)…I mean Existence…(hehehehe..don’t be mad at me ;( hahaha im Crazy-Proclivity) his world turned upside down.Bella is the sun in his universe.Can you imagine a universe without a star? He may be used to it b4 and he manage to live it but Bella Changed EVERYTHING.I don’t think he’ll get thru.

Everytime Bella’s out of reach or he feels he can’t protect her…he’s going mad.Like Crazy-Mad.
When he’s like this…he can not think in the most subjective way possible even if he is the person of.Then he will do anything…ANYTHING!!!! Good or Bad.Carlisle might help straighten him but we read New Moon already and this just confirmed everything.

And no, I disagree. There’s a difference between a) he needs Bella and b) he needs Bella to put him together. But previously, we were discussing on the basis that Bella holds the key to the relationship. By interpreting that, I come to the conclusion that Kelly was implying that without Bella, Edward would fall apart.

This is not true. The relationship between Bella and Edward is not dependent only on one person. As we have witnessed for ourselves in New Moon, both Bella and Edward rely on each other to survive. And in NM, actually, Edward didn’t fall apart. He just grew cold, lonely, distant and depressed. But Bella did.

But that is what I see NM as, and despite my own stand, I wanted to know about Kelly’s POV and how her POV led to her concluding statement that Bella is the master between them two, therefore I’d told her that I didn’t understand.

When you emphasize it like that, then I understand.If its the question of ‘a)’ then my last answer would fit.If its a question of ‘b)’ hmm..I think im gonna Stick to that too.But im curious though.How can you be so sure Edward was not falling apart?I know Bella is,but why not?? Edward might be perfect,but c’mon…didn’t you read MS?I used to think that Edward is beyond perfect but after his POV, i am not so sure.But it made me fell for him more! When he left in NM,i don’t think he left with some kind of a sad reserved tone.I think when he left,he died actually.Eventhough he knows it would be the best for Bella’s life, the moment he took off ,Im pretty sure he was in mourning.And rather dwelling in his sorrowed soul.Rhetorically. He might say that he can’t live in a world where Bella is not,but in this situation,knowing Bella is living, is just one step away of stopping him from taking his own life.Yes he will break his rule some time if he is being negligent and went to see Bella again w/out any presence (if he manages to) but in his conscious aggrieved mind,he would not allow that to happen really.This to me is way way past from ‘falling apart’ mode.He’s dispirited already!

Everyone should contribute what they have in mind.Whats the point of doing this (discussion box) if we are just going to stop by and answer the questions? I bet a lot of us has something to offer and when we exchange that, it gives us more in-depth view in this fandom(that everyone finds annoying-what?!) we’re in.You know what i mean?

But if you find its getting confusing, there always something else to talk about.Like,..hmm…Edward’s face drooling?hahahaha…

I agree with Shi Ting, relief.

She didn’t want Edward to think she was scared of him and afraid that he’d leave if he knew she was frighten of him. Sometimes I answer too quickly too. LOL

I didn’t understand what you were referring to with that sentence. And I still don’t.

And, okay, let’s compare Edward and Bella side by side in New Moon.
Bella was once a normal girl. She met Edward, fell in love, got happy. But her source of happiness left, and she crashed. She fell apart. She felt her chest being ripped apart.

Edward was once a semi-depressed guy. Nothing much interested him for the past half a century, since he’d gotten used to his vegetarian vampire lifestyle. Bella came, he fell in love, got somewhat happier. But he left Bella. He was irreparable, for the only way to save him would be to let himself be with Bella; but he didn’t fall apart.

Im pretty sure he was in mourning.And rather dwelling in his sorrowed soul.
Yes! But he didn’t fall apart. To fall apart would be like to be in deep depression. But Edward didn’t get into depression. He’s too unhuman to be in depression. Idk if you understand where I’m getting at, but basically there’s a difference between falling apart and being alone and lonely and unhappy.

He might say that he can’t live in a world where Bella is not,but in this situation,knowing Bella is living, is just one step away of stopping him from taking his own life.
Taking his own life if Bella is dead too != falling apart. It just implies his devotion and how much Bella means to him.

GET IT GET IT?

I don’t think I do.. ;( Its all become twisted into Edward is incapable of being human(metaphorically speaking k?) which I think is not true because he has that already.To be clear,I know He Is Not anymore…duh?..hahaha.A quality of a human i mean.It just got clouded or somehow erased.When he fell in love, he can see it again.But not entirely because of Bella’s muted mind and yada yada..but,

Is it because he has no blood running in his veins that he somehow can’t feel how a human should feel? But how would you know he is not falling apart? Or in depression ,but not really?

OH NO NO LOL I LOVE DISCUSSING THE DEFINITION OF ‘falling apart’. XD

Okay. Let’s go through point by point.

The point is, r u trying to say that to ‘fall apart’ you need to be physically in pain?
No. You see (okay, if only I could draw a graph to explain this):
Bella: Depressed > slowly rises out of depression bit by bit, and the maximum she hit was 40% of her depression gone because of Jacob > feels numb > occasionally full depressive clouds goes over her
Edward:
OKAY, I think I found it: My definition of ‘falling apart’, is when someone is so conscious of the pain and depression that the person numbs it out – and the overwhelming sadness is always lingering in the background, just waiting to be triggered so it could resurface. To fall apart would be to be crestfallen to the extreme, conscious, and then pushing it out of the body.

Just for background information, I compare Bella’s acute awareness of her depression to Edward’s normal everyday senses. Which means, if Bella is very aware of a certain emotion she’s feeling, to Edward (because he’s a vampire), his whole life has been lived to clearly that that extremeness for Bella is nothing but normal to him.

Therefore, I believe that falling apart is not a term whose conditions are fixed and can be applied to everyone. In this case, because Bella felt that despair so clearly, she fell apart in that term. However, even though Edward felt the same level of disconsolation, he’d been living his entire undead life so clearly, that nothing can define ‘sharp’ anymore.

I know you are getting confused now. Edward is a vampire, and only his physical senses are extremely sensitive. However, you have to see that simply because his physical senses are so much sharper now, that his personality has adjusted to that sharpness and therefore, whatever emotion inflicted on him isn’t that strong, too.

Ah, but that’s where you’re wrong, I think. Bella, being a human, wasn’t herself anymore. But Edward did not change. Like Stephenie Meyer had mentioned, vampires are as hard and strong as their physical form – they are really like granite. Only once in a while would something happen that would change them entirely, and when that happens, there’s not going back. When Edward fell in love with Bella, there was no rewinding of the clock.

Therefore, technically, even though Edward ditched his family and stuff, the whole family of them are vampires and can take it. You see, it’s like, being a vampire, they are able to expect anything. Edward didn’t do anything shocking besides trying to commit suicide but even then, his committing suicide was very Edward-ish behaviour. He was still himself.

And I actually feel that falling apart would be, to be so conscious that after a while, you feel numb of the feeling and you would refuse to bring it up. It’s like, you’re stuck in that bleakness because you have no opportunity to be happy due to your situation, but you refuse to face it, too. Understand?

Edward taking his own life does not equal to falling apart. I mean, that was what you were trying to point out, right?

No lah, as in like, if I had to plot a graph of level of depression against time, I’d be able to better explain it. I actually like to explain in detail and using my imagination.

WHOA I’M SURPRISED. Sometimes it’s like, I have a lot of details and I try to explain them but sometimes I jumble the stuff up and in the end the person on the listening end gets so confused I have to stop talking. But it saddens me when I become incapable of enabling someone to understand my POV so I try my best to explain clearly.

EW, JUNIOR COLLEGE. LOL. But, nah, I’m not good at explaining in real life. I am actually quite aloof in person sometimes, and my brain can stop functioning at times. I can’t think fast enough too. I’m not even on the debate team on my school. I’m just good at branching out and listing out, but not good enough for on the spot stuff. I always take my time to type out my stuff and my answer above probably took me about 45 minutes to do.

It’s hard to explain but at that stage I don’t think it is love yet. Don’t kill me for saying that. I think at that point, Bella is just crushing on Edward.

Uhh @Bessy My Chem teacher mentioned that granite doesn’t sparkle unlike diamonds LOL. But they’re both very hard.
