Twilight Online Book Discussion: First Sight
Beginning today, Bessy (that’s me!) will post a book discussion entry for every chapter in Twilight every Sunday. In each entry, I will include an excerpt from the chapter as well as a question. You can choose to reply to the question or just speak your mind about any part of the chapter. It’s a free-for-all kind of thing.
As this is a book discussion, do remember to check back every once in a while to see if anyone has replied to your comment! The rules are very simple: No quarrelling, no bashing, no hate. Everyone just enjoy yourselves and be open. 
Today, I’ll be embarking on Chapter 1: First Sight.
I couldn’t stop myself from peeking occasionally through the screen of my hair at the strange boy next to me. During the whole class, he never relaxed his stiff position on the edge of his chair, sitting as far from me possible. I could see his hand on his left skin. This, too, he never relaxed. He had the long sleeves of his white shirt pushed up to his elbows, and his forearm was surprisingly hard and muscular beneath his light skin. He wasn’t nearly as slight as he’d looked next to his burly brother.
The class seemed to drag on longer than the others. Was it because the day was finally coming to a close, or because I was waiting for his tight fist to loosen? It never did; he continued to sit so still it looked like he wasn’t breathing. What was wrong with him? Was this his normal behaviour? I questioned my judgment on Jessica’s bitterness at lunch today. Maybe she was not as resentful as I’d thought.
It couldn’t have anything to do with me. He didn’t know me from Eve.
I peeked up at him one more time, and regretted it. He was glaring down at me again, his black eyes full of revulsion. As I flinched away from him, shrinking against my chair, the phrase if looks could kill suddenly rang through my mind.
At that moment, the bell rang loudly, making me jump, and Edward Cullen was out of his seat. Fluidly he rose – he was much taller than I’d thought – his back to me, and he was out the door before anyone else was out of their seat.
Q1: When Bella described that Edward was “was out the door before anyone else was out of their seat”, did you presume that he simply walked very quickly or he’d thrown in a bit of his powers and almost ran out of the room at superhuman speed?
YAY, NASH SAYS I CAN ADD IN MORE QUESTIONS, LOL. I shall try for a few fun ones, all right?
Q2: The story goes that the Cullens moved down to Forks from Alaska two years ago. Using your imagination, how do you think Jessica knew about that? Since, very obviously, the Cullens do not talk to the humans.
Q3: Do you think it would have been easier for Edward to kill Ms Cope and then Bella in the office, or the entire Biology class? You can interpret “easier” in whatever manner you wish, like with regards to his ability or how much less of a hassle it would have been to murder only Ms Cope. Any way you want to.
I swear I’m not being sadistic!

Izzatee I luv that scene so much.With regards to the question, I actually thought he’d used his vampire powers, rofl. It wasn’t until I watched the movie that my impression was dispelled. IKR, I am so bad at imagining things. I mean, it’s impossible for him to be so fast!

Omg, Mr Banner has a slight crush on Bella? LOL. I agree with you too, I think he used his powers so that he wouldn’t kill that bunch of “children”.

I forgot where I’d read it, Midnight Sun or Stephenie’s website, but it’s true. Edward said it before. That’s why Edward told Bella she obviously can’t see herself very well, because she thinks she’s too normal and average for all those attention the boys at school showered her, but in fact, even Mr. Banner liked Bella!

He better be moving fast because Bella’s scent is too overpowering for him and he has to strongly resist the urge to kill her and possibly everyone who was in the same room as her.
I was reading this part in Midnight Sun and OME… the thoughts that were running through his head during this period. HE actually strategically planned of how he was going to kill everyone. That part blew my mind!

I thought he used a little of his power when I was reading the book. But after watching the movie, he sort of knew when the bell would ring so he got up just before the bell rang and moved fast.
Anyway, I don’t get it by “He didn’t know me from Eve.”

well,i think that edward did somehow used his powers because how can he get up and moved so fast than the others when the bell rang!and of course he somehow knew the bell would rang that’s why he get up on his seat.He also tried not to ‘kill’ the children and also bella because of her scent.

I think that edward did not use his power,he got a sense when the bell will rang and stand up a few seconds before the bell rang,but to my conclusion he used a minor bit of power ba…=)

Me too! I wasn’t thinking in that direction, and when I saw the movie I just went, “OHHHHH.”
Anyway, I don’t get it by “He didn’t know me from Eve.”
It means that Edward never knew Bella from Adam and Eve’s time. It’s just a metaphor for saying Edward has never known her her whole life, so she’s perplexed as to why, seeing that it was the first time she was meeting him, he could immediately take to having strong dislike towards her.

Okay..i thought he walked out fast but in super-macho way…like the perfect “walk-out” with vengeance..kind of way, way?…hehehe
When I read that part Im like…wOw…and thinking “What the heck is wrong with this fella?”,but at the same time I was in awe…couse im imagining Rob’s face walking out in vengeance.hehehe
But yeah,I never actually see him in this “superman” action in that first part becouse it was still the beginning of the book and like all of us Im trying to figure out Edward.And i also thought that when that happened,I never really imagined whats going on in Edward’s head that I kind of presume that he doesnt like someone sitting beside him.hahaha..Like,”Who do you think you are sitting at my table?”hehehe
The thought that he’s thirsty never entered my mind really.It was just pure curiosity and scary for my part.I thought for a second there he’s going to punch Bella or something.Couse he didn’t actually glare Bella at the cafeteria at first.Unlike in the movie,Edward wasnt weird at all.He was adorable really.And in class all of a sudden he showed this strong resentment towards Bella that it shocked me a lil too.
And i have to say its kind of funny that all of our interpretations of everything is going out together with midnight sun and the movie.hehehe…
uhmm..Bessy,am I doing this right?Should we do this discussion like applying Midnight Sun and the movie or just twilight the book?Couse im kind of confused now…hehehe..sorry

I thought that he used a bit of his vamp speed and abit of his trying-to-act-like-a-human skill. O_O
I liked how she said Edward Cullen, instead of Edward. Sorta gives it a more formal tone, since she didn’t know him.

I think that Edward knew the class was about to end so he get his butt up early and zoom out the class. And i think that Bella was so contented into how Edward was staring at her and that she forgot her surroundings.. you know like.. time went by so fast when you are so concentrated into something.. yea.. =]

In the movie, the teacher is Mr. Molina, not Mr. Banner, so definitely not Kristen. Jose Zuniga portrayed Mr. Molina in the movie. Why would you think that he would actually have those kind of thoughts? I mean, from the book sypnosis we already know that he’s a vampire, so I don’t think his fist-clutching reaction would actually mean anything superficial like pride, you know? Plus it wasn’t her fault she had to sit there. That’s the only empty seat left in class.

Oh no it’s all right. You can digress or go out of point, but as long as at the end of the day what you’re discussing still ultimately stemmed from the chapter we’re talking about. Like I said, “It’s a free-for-all kind of thing.”

Yes, exactly what I thought too! But I was also rethinking that conclusion. I mean, Bella is so observant. She would have realized then that he was being unusually fast.

Yeah but I think it’s a natural way of writing. I mean, I’ve just met someone whom I barely know and he already hates me! I would call him with his surname, too.

No, actually I disagree with that part. Why would Bella be satisfied that Edward was glaring at her? Even if he’s a gorgeous guy? And she forgot her surroundings because she was wishing Edward would loosen up his fists. When you’re feeling uncomfortable, you tend to feel uncomfortable throughout your whole body, and you would wish that the unsatisfying situation would quickly dispel away.
It’s a psychological thing. So when you keep wishing it would hurry up and end, you just keep waiting for it to end. And because it never ended till the bell rang, that’s why time seemed to pass so slowly for Bella.

Well of course i read the book first.I took Edward’s,i mean face,i mean rob’s face first from the promotional pics and adapt it to Edward that time.All moves is purely my imagination.Im good sometimes at imagining things.ehe.Plus,the trailers were Awesome that it made me happy!And i expected when watching the movie,Rob to do Edward great but…well we all saw what happened.He was Really good in my imagination though.sigh~ but i still do love him people!
Well yeah you were right Bessy,they did mention it in the sypnosis.haha.But I don’t know if you would call it strange but,I’d like to not have the short story at the back bother me so much.Thats why I think when Bella started,it started 4 me too.
So I thought that he might actually want to punch her at that time.I don’t mean any harm to anyone really but instinctively,that was my first impression of Edward.And not knowing anything,makes it a good read!Surprises popping out in all the right places!hehehe

I have to agree with Bessy that its totally a psycho thing.Couldn’t even put it into words meself!hehehe…I used to have that feeling where you just praying to God something will pass but it doesn’t.It did not make you lose track of time though,it made you notice it even more!It’s insane!hehehe

Hahaha,,okay,be nice ;(.Im not the typical bookworm.I read books when i hear good things about them.Its embarassing really…ehe:)

You know at first I was shocked with Rob’s performance.But strangely it felt kind of right.In all those interviews that Rob and Kristen did prior to the premier,I think Rob understands Edward better than most of us.Well, movie wise. He gave everything he could and you could see that in the movie.Its just sad that the editing and a coupla directions
..ruin it all.And unfortunately it showed.I thought that was where it went wrong.

For Q2:
Yes I doubt the sibling Cullens will talk about it.But even so,any one of them wouldn’t mind talking to anyone.I remembered that Charlie said they were very good kids.Never had tickets or any kind of problems.So maybe someone with “cahones” might go up to them and made some small talk right?They could get their info from whoever that person may be.It could be Charlie too.Or the nurses?And spread it like any other small town roll. Carlisle could be the one talking too.He’s like the spokesperson of the Cullen family.
For Q3:
mmm..yup definitely eat Cope first..but isnt the office suppose to have 2,3 persons there?I remembered someone opened the door right?then Edward got a whiff of Bella essence again.
Then the girl went out..but Bella was outside right?She didn’t want to have Edward’s hostile aura again and she stands outside hoping Edward didn’t see her
But yeah in this situation it would have been easier or acceptable should I say, rather than a gruesome massacre scene in Banner’s class.

Actually I disagree with that! Stephenie created Edward and her whole Twilight world and, even though her characters have a personality of their own, but I’m pretty sure that she understands Edward the most, apart from Bella. Yet, I clearly recall that when filming first began, Rob and SMeyer debated with each other on how Edward really is. And as much as I love Rob’s interpretation of Edward, I still feel that SMeyer definitely knows Edward better. But of course I can see that Rob indeed “gave everything he could and you could see that in the movie.”
For Q3: Oh, no, in the office there was only Ms Cope and Bella. Bella was *in* the office. You should reread the book, haha! What happened was:
1. Bella entered the office. She discovered Edward’s presence there. So she stayed stiffly close to the wall.
2. Edward was negotiating with Ms Cope, the only human in the office besides Bella, to trade classes.
3. Some girl opened the door to put some papers in the tray and left. But by doing so, a gust of wind rushed in.
4. Edward sniffed Bella’s scent, stiffened and left the office in a hostile manner.
5. Bella handed her slips to Ms Cope, and then left and teared in her truck, because apparently she cries when she’s angry.

Yes yes.. i knew about the part where Rob just wasn’t having it with Stephenie that Edward let Carlisle be the father and all that stuff.That was funny.And of course dear,the author create that universe. I meant “the rest of us” the fans of book and movie…The ones outside the box if you know what I mean.I can’t say that I understood Edward better,I think he’s open to how he is going to be in our heads aside from what Stephenie gave us.And Rob was definitely living Edward.I don’t know,I think he’s applying Edward on how he should be.He inflict that “Essence of Edward”
with what he Thought It Would Be if the case were to be him.So,Rob was giving us Edward but at that first take,It was weird for the community that didn’t read the book at all and yes for us twihards.Its even more painful that the movie was 2 hours,yada yada…..it just went wrong!!!
(I still haven’t get over people who didn’t like the movie.Its one thing for us didn’t, well,weren’t fond of it at first,but it is a whole different thing for people didn’t read the book.)
I thought that Rob was making Edward someone real,or something real? I should say? And eventhough Stephenie the Creator of twilight universe,knew her Edward,..In my point of view, Rob kind of showed him in another light,couse he has to live it.He has to be Edward,the dying kid who has no say with his life and was subjected to live in eternity.And was known to have said that he hated it(vampire life) so much.Who would have thought that maybe he Did want his life to end back at 1918? And accepted that fact.He pretty much don’t have anyone.His parents died,no story about friends,girlfriends,relatives,or even life goals! Maybe he understood that it was just suppose to happen.That was it.Thats how it ends for him.Am I making sense?hahaha
Oh no,,I told you I don’t have my twilight book with me.Someone borrowed it!And I only read it twice.Forgive me! yeah…i remember it now…hehehe..you’re right.But still, if you want to know,I’d rather have the CSI in that office than in the classroom.Much easier.Plus,with no one there,he would hav thought of millions of alibi or maybe just not since he ate without staining his shirt and just ran out of the room when he’s done.Maybe save his family some since they weren’t having any for a long time..i mean Jasper wouldn’t mind right?And live in Forks like nothing happened.But then again I wouldn’t wish anything like that.Becouse we will not have this crazy passionate obsession to Twilight!It would be just that…Bella Got Eaten.And got “tapau”ed to the Cullens.

I guessed Edward moved quickly and a little too quickly to be human speed.

I think the teacher announced to the class that the Cullens just moved to Forks from Alaska. You know, those normal intros haha.

I reckon it’s easier to kill Ms Cope in the office. It’s only one person! And in Biology class, it’s a bit risky since there are a lot of students in the room (even though it’ll take Edward very fast to kill them all).

I agree that it’s unfair that people haven’t given the novel a chance, and yet criticize it so much. But, how about changing your point of view and looking from their side for a while? The media keep comparing this love story to Harry Potter and the only things these two franchises have in common are that they’re fiction, have been made into movie(s) and have casted Robert Pattinson.
I kind of think that it’s actually the media’s fault for placing so much emphasis and hype onto this low budget book-to-movie adaptation. Definitely not everyone’s fault, but generally it’s the press that’s been generating all these high expectations.
In my point of view, Rob kind of showed him in another light,couse he has to live it.
But you see, that’s where Rob went wrong. Edward is a vampire. To him, walking at a human pace is slow moving. It would be like humans taking one step every four seconds. So, to vampires, even if they don’t want to be perfect, they are. Look at Breaking Dawn. Bella processed so many thoughts in less than one second.
But still, if you want to know,I’d rather have the CSI in that office than in the classroom.Much easier.Plus,with no one there,he would hav thought of millions of alibi or maybe just not since he ate without staining his shirt and just ran out of the room when he’s done.
Noooo, you can’t think that way! Edward is a deep person. First of all, he wouldn’t commit a crime and ditch responsibility. Secondly, the reason why he tolerated and didn’t devour Bella that very moment, was because he didn’t want to break everything that Carlisle had built for the family in the spur of a moment. Over a mere human? Thirdly, the reason why he didn’t kill Bella there and then was because of his many years of practice. And why did he live on animal blood for so many years?
Because, like he’d said in the movie, “I don’t want to be a monster.”
His issues with struggling not to kill Bella the first time he caught a whiff of her scent has nothing to do with whether he could get caught or not. He has a conscience. Rather, it’s because he has moral values.

Hmm.yeah.Good point Bessy.The media.They dont care about anything really.They just want to sell their stuff.It made me sad to think of it. ;(
I think it would have been better if it had that treatment like Juno.
It was a low budget film too at first,but it gained a lot of recognition in the end.

Q3: I’m quite sure that it is easier to kill Ms Cope and Bella in the office rather than the entire biology class. Haha, Ms Cope is madly infatuated with Edward and she is already kind of distracted. It’s no problem dealing with her. XD And anyway, if he did kill the entire biology class, people would obviously know it’s him who did it because he is the only one who survived. Furthermore, he would risk exposing his entire family of vampires as everyone would wonder how he had massacred the entire class in such a short time and also, by himself. But if you think of ‘easier’ in that sense, it might be easier for him to lose control in the biology class rather than in the office. I don’t know, it’s like a feeling.

Actually did you know Edward is really dark? He’s depressed. You could apply that term to his condition, pre-Bella. Bella resurrected the human in him and made him alive again. But after Bella came into his life, he had this civil war going within inside him. He was struggling to stay away from her for her own good, but wanting to love her and be with her too.
Poor guy. He suffered his whole life. But Rob’s interpretation of playing Edward as an imperfect guy is wrong.

I think it would have been better if it had that treatment like Juno.

Heh, actually I was referring to the media, not the haters. The media, meaning like for example, Entertainment Weekly, LA Times, E! Online etc. You get me? But yeah, I am also slightly frustrated with those people who hate on Twilight without even giving it a chance. I don’t like Harry Potter, and I’ve never read it, but at least I don’t hate on it.
O, THE COMPARISONS. Once again, it’s the media’s fault. All they ever say is “the next big thing since Harry Potter.” Psh. “The next J. K. Rowling.” “The next blockbuster”, “the biggest book to movie adaptation since Harry Potter”, etc. I can recite the recycled headlines. Of course, not everyone went along those lines, but still.
LOL, I’M ANYTHING BUT A LITERATURE TEACHER K. The only book I’ll ever pass is probably Twilight. And possibly the sequels. I’m going onto Sec 3 this coming Friday (school’s starting, boo) and I dropped Literature. I barely scraped a 60ish result for my end of year. I’m so ironic.

Eh. I actually don’t like to mix Kristen and Bella up, just like how I differentiate between Rob and Edward. It especially makes me sad that Rob thinks girls like him only because he’s playing Edward Cullen.

Yes, indeed Kristen is channelling her own personality into Bella, but they’re different, still. You know, the thing that bugs actors the most is that in the eyes of the public, sometimes they become attached to their role even though they’re nothing like them, but even if Kristen and Bella share similar personality traits, I still don’t think it’d do them justice to jumble them up together.

See what I meant? And there is such a huge difference. Just because Rob looks the part of Edward doesn’t mean he *is* Edward. As I have mentioned before, the only things Rob and Edward share in common are that they both have old souls and are good-looking. Edward is not insecure! (I’m trying to figure out now whether you’ve gotten Edward or Rob wrong.) EDWARD IS EVERYTHING BUT INSECURE. See, he is a vampire. He just hates himself and doesn’t want to be a monster, but it doesn’t mean he is insecure. Insecurity happens to someone when he/she is lacking in confidence. Edward does not lack confidence, he’s just short of self-love. He needs some donation of narcissism from Rosalie.

When Bella broke up with Jacob,and chose him,he actually wants Bella to think it through again because theres a chance that Bella should have a change of heart after what happened in New Moon.Even when everyone knows that Edward stands by what he thinks is right,he knew that he broke her and maybe he didn’t have her the way he used to be.And him having a moment of relapse there meant to me that he does not know how truly important he is in Bella’s life.And it seems to me that he feels he does not deserve Bella anymore.Jacob helped Bella getting thru it all right?Eventhough it kills him, he will surrender,if Bella wants him to.But he should know better.He should feel confident about his relationship with Bella.Because Bella wasn;t broken at all given that Edward is in her life again.

Sorry so late getting into this discussion but here goes….
As for question #1 Edward used his powers alright but not the power of speed, he used the power of reading minds, he knew when the bell would ring and got up then..
question #2 Jessica and the school knew about alaska from Mr and Mrs Cullen.. Carlisle is around people everyday i am sure some of the town folks had asked him those question’s when they arrived and thats how the town knew where they came from.
Question #3—Much much easier to kill the two of them than the whole class, i’m sure he could do away with the class very quickly but there would be less of a chance of anyone screaming with just two in the office..
